An in-depth exploration of the art of the Hawaiian lei

In this course we approach the lei as a metaphor for Hawaiian culture. Just as a lei is not made from a single flower, but dependent on the different elements working together in balance and harmony, so too is our culture and environment. We learn to make the main styles of lei, including kui, hili, wili, nīpuʻu, haku, kā wili, humu papa, and others, and to combine techniques. We learn which styles and techniques are appropriate to which materials. The course also covers growing a lei garden, and supporting the health of the environment.
